A Day in Rome

We headed out early to get to the Colosseum before it got crowded. The day was picture perfect. This afternoon we are taking another walking tour and then dinner. These were taken this morning! There is a slideshow at the end so be sure to view that for more….

The Tibere River

The Colosseum was first named the Flavian Amphitheater. In it’s prime it was covered with marble and each portico was filled with marble statues. You can see the only remaining marble on some seats. The walls are three layers thick and were built to withstand an eathquake.

We then drove to the Vatican to view St. Peter’s. It is Saint Joseph’s day today so the museums are closed. We will go back tomorrow to see them.

The slideshow will show some of the mosaic work inside!
